Decklink 4k pro

#1
I never noticed this before but there is a decklink 4k pro for a little more than half the price of the 4k extreme. Has anyone tested this with casparCG and outputting a signal with fill and key to a mixer?

Decklink 4k pro - key and fill ?

#7
DeckLink 4K Pro is a high performance PCIe capture and playback card with advanced 12G-SDI for working with the latest high frame rate Ultra HD and DCI 4K formats at up to 60 frames per second! Ideal for both traditional 2D and high end 3D stereoscopic workflows, you get support for full resolution, deep color YUV and 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 images. DeckLink 4K Pro features two multi rate 12G-SDI inputs and outputs with support for 16 channels of embedded audio, along with a connection for reference input. Because the connections are multi rate, it works with virtually every SD, HD, Ultra HD and 4K format. DeckLink 4K Pro is perfect for high end film, television, and commercial editing, visual effects, and color grading projects.
The current description doesn't say anything about key and fill, but about 3D and visual effects. I hope, it can synchronous key and fill (As written in the press release). If yes, I would change my 2 Mini-Monitor to it.

I've deleted a post where I was talking about this 4K Pro card. It says Key & Fill in the specs :))
Hey there,

I saw the new decklink capture cards while looking for components for a new casparcg machine.
Image
It claims to be capable of outputting key & fill, and a lot cheaper than the 4K extreme.

That's good news, right?

Re: Decklink 4k pro

The micro studio camera still says September. I remember them saying august earlier on for the decklonk. Are you saying other venders don't list it as in stock yet? Probably best to call B&H to get the real answer.

Re: Decklink 4k pro

#21
But it does not. The system is unable to initialize the card.
The card requieres PCIe Gen2 as you can see from the specification.
It is able to handle 12G SDI with fill&key so this is up to 24G of bandwith on PCIe bus...

Re: Decklink 4k pro

#25
Premultiply, are you sure your drivers were configured correctly? The searching I have done indicate that PCIe 2.0 cards can be used in 1.0 slots. Sure there would be a problem with the higher resolution captures just like if it was used in a x8 slot wired for four lanes. PCIe 2.0 has been out for a while by now so many people won't have a problem.

Re: Decklink 4k pro

#28
My local dealer in Germany announces the card for autumn. Some people here in the forum they have already and also tested with CasparCG.

The important question: Does it really supports an synchronous key/fill like the "old" Decklink 4K Extreme ? Or does the channels are totally independent (and so mybe asynchronous) like when using a Decklink Duo or two Mini Monitor ?

EDIT:

When the card was announced in a press release from April 13, 2015, there was written "That means customers can work with dual stream 3D as well as get simultaneous fill and key capture and playback" and "Fill and Key in Ultra HD 60p".

In the actual tech spec I can't read it....

So can the card key/fill or not ?

Hello i'm testing 4K Pro this morning with casparCG 2.0.7.1.
Works OK with HD video mode.
----------------------
For higher video mode, I get an important issue. Image is not displayed at 25fps as I expect. Images are displayed slowly. I tried with more than one file, results are the same.

When playing, i get some warnings fat the trace level, see below. But these warnings occur not every time. And I have the slow playout always !

If I look ate the diagnostics, frame-time is very hight and recha to top of the scale very often. (can you tell me how to add an image to the topic ?)

Do somebody have an ides of where is the bottleneck ?
Do somebedy know this issue ?

Configuration:
My hardware is :
- 1 Blackmagic 4K PRO, 1 output configured, synck input ok (blask burst)
- Host : windows7 64bits, 1 XEON 3.3GHZ, 32GB memory, GPU nvidia K2000.
CPU of the machine doesn't exceed 10 or 20% on the 8 cores. For me the CPU is not the bottleneck

I redo a test with my DecklinK 4K Pro.

I see that there are manu "perturbations" when playing. For example, the tick-time of the deckling is totally wring when the frame-time is high.

Note that video reference (25fps) is connected to the board. I don't play branding, only video. PLAY 1-1 %file%

What can we conclude with this screenshot ?
II get also some warnings at the GPU level but not so often as for a screen consumer.

I did 2 tests with the same file (skyfall4K downloaded from the net).
With Decklink consumer : playout is slow

I attached the 2 diagnostics windows.

I also did tests following the request : image sizexfps = config sizexfps
Playout with Decklink consumer is always too slow.

Re: Decklink 4k pro

I got my new Decklink 4K pro and got it to work well with video and key on 1 channel.
This is the first time I use a Decklink card, I was using only Bluefish cards before.

I wonder however if I can configurate both outputs as separate channels, to obtain 2 independent channels without key-out. This would come in handy for outputs for screens or projectors that do not need a key.

I tried a config like this, but it outputs the same video on both outputs for channel 1, while doing nothing with channel 2:

Code: Select all

<channels>
    <channel>
        <video-mode>1080i5000</video-mode>
        <channel-layout>passthru</channel-layout>
        <straight-alpha-output>false</straight-alpha-output>
        <consumers>
           <decklink>
              <device>1</device>
              <latency>normal</latency>
              <keyer>default</keyer>
              <key-only>false</key-only>
              <buffer-depth>1</buffer-depth>
              <custom-allocator>true</custom-allocator>
           </decklink>
        </consumers>
    </channel>
    <channel>
        <video-mode>1080i5000</video-mode>
        <channel-layout>passthru</channel-layout>
        <straight-alpha-output>false</straight-alpha-output>
        <consumers>
           <decklink>
             <device>2</device>
              <latency>normal</latency>
              <keyer>default</keyer>
              <key-only>false</key-only>
              <buffer-depth>2</buffer-depth>
              <custom-allocator>true</custom-allocator>
           </decklink>
        </consumers>
    </channel>
  </channels>
What do all these config lines do? Is there a setting in the desktop video utility? I do not find any.

Another problem I have with this card is that the second video input does not work as a key-in. When I apply a fill-and-key input the fill is visible but the key is filled with white.
I may need key-in in a future project. Does anyone know if this can be made to work?

I tried various settings in config and desktop video utility. Even with internal keyer, the video has no key-in.

AFAIK no. You would need to use two channels (to cards or a duo) and play fill and key on separate layers and let one be the key for the other using a mixer effect.

The project is to make a replacement for an Avid (formerly Pinnacle) Thunder machine. This machine is now discontinued, and since our company is now in severe austerity mode, more pricey solutions are ruled out.
Not all functionality of a real Thunder machine would be needed, but one of the desired features would be having a Video+Key input, so we can acquire clips from an existing Clarity character generator with V+K output. This would free up the CG machine for a number of reasons.
Exporting the CG directly as a file would require extra licenses and is not available on all machines.

Using two Decklink cards is a possible, and even desirable option, but I expect problems with synchronicity between the fill and the key clip, because they would need to be recorded using two separate commands to two separate CasparCG channels.

I cannot test this theory now, because the 4Kpro is for now the only Decklink card I have.

No, you would stack the two inputs in a single channel, using a MIXER effect to key away the transparency of the fill input. Then you would record that single channel with alpha enabled. Did not test this, but the two Decklink inputs should stay in sync and as long as they are, the recording will also.

I think that the only way to do this is to use 2 separate channels, as Didi suggested, since no Decklink board supports key in. Maybe a Bluefish boards supports it, but I don't know the Bluefish boards well enough.

Having said that: maybe the new Decklink Quad 2 will support it in the future. It is supposed to be a free configurable board (see also http://casparcg.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3372) so it might support key in as well. The specs are a bit vague at the moment though and probably only will become clear when the board is released next year. However Didi's solution using a Decklink Duo will still be the cheapest solution (and you don't have to wait for the Decklink Quad to be released).

AFAIK no Bluefish board has ever been supported by CasparCG for video input, and probably never will (I have several Bluefish cards, from before I even knew about CasparCG), so even if one model features a V+K input, (mine does not) it's of no use.

Dual boards or one duo board may be an option, although I fear for synchronicity problems when capturing from 2 independent devices using separate CCG channels. I cannot try that now, since the one 4KPro is for now all I got.

Hi Canigou,

You should really test this with a video file in EXACTLY the same resolution and framerate as you caspar channel. The best way to do that is to recode your mp4 file to 2160p23,98 as your decklink channel.

The live recoding (scale the video on runtime) doesn't scale very well over the CPU threads/cores, so it won't use all system resources correctly. So it will result in drop frames even when the system is not running at full speed.

Please let us know it this works and if you are able to get synchornized key and fill (as the original posters asked)

Great news! I was having a doubt to suggest this card to some people because i wasn't sure that it feeds two signals (fill & key). Now i am sure and may be buy it for myself! Already have a 4K Extreme and plan to build another graphics station))))
