Identify the bottleneck

Postby Ardingo » 07 Mar 2017, 17:11

Good morning everybody and thank you in advance for your help
I'm here searching for a little help in hardware configuration for Caspar.
We are using Capsar CG for sdi fill and key lowerthird sport production - and sometimes small contribution playout - in 1080 i50 on our small obvan.
The computer that produce F&k is assembled in a rack case
We are experiencing a couple of problems

First, the in and out animation is flickering and loosing frames.
Consider that the same config do have any problem when we use it with an external ultrastudio 4k controlled by a macbook pro 2011.

Second issue is that when we added a pci decklink mini monitor to route preview of caspar the other Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme 3D stopped to work.
So the questions are:
1_ Do someone experienced some kind of incompatibility between old and new BMD cards? Or it can be simply a power consumption issue?
2_ and most important. This is our setup
ASUS p7p55d Pro
INTEL core i7 860
CORSAIR ddr3 16gb 1866
SSD primary KINGSTON HARD DISK SSD SOLID STATE 2,5 120GB SUV400S37/120G SATA 6Gb/s
SSD for contribution: KINGSTON HARD DISK SSD SOLID STATE 2,5 120GB SUV400S37/120G SATA 6Gb/s
Video Board 2GB INNO 3D GeFORCE GT 730 DVI VGA HDMI DDR3 64BIT CUDA
Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme 3D
My doubt is: the bottleneck of this configuration is: the video card? the old BMD Extreme 3D ? The CPU?
If we have a budget to expend on it, what doyou suggest to improve?

Thank you really very very much for any kind of help.

I would guess that it is the old Extreme 3D as it was made for 32 bit Windows. By the way: What Windows version? I would look at the new Decklink Duo 2 as it gives you 2x fill & key or fill & key and preview and input etc. from a single slot and with "real" BNC connectors.

It could be a thermal problem, too. Since 1u rack case tend to get hot if not assembled carefully and the decklinks + gpu cards are emitting plenty of heat, the system may just get to hot.

Have you done some diag tests?
How is your temp (GPU, CPU, CASE etc), your GPU + CPU workload etc.
Also interesting, the diag window from ccg (command: diag).

That may give a solid hint were to investigate.

cheers

Thank you guys really helpfull!
We are using Win 10 btw.
Do you think Decklink Duo 2 is a good improve? Or better the Intensity extreme? I'm searching everywere some benchmark of BMS PCI but I never found it.

I never tested temp, I will be on it and I will post results

You will not find any benchmarks about Decklink cards, as you cannot measure their performance. They either support a framerate / reasolution or they do not. System performance is responsible to deliver the frames to them in time, so if the system performs well the Decklink will also, but not the other way around. You will not get benchmarks of PC monitors either, do you?

Does the Intensity Extreme have fill & key? Is it still in production? I would not recomend buying phased out models second hand, as you don't have auick access to a replacement if anything happens.

Hi
I have already 3 duo 2. I think its the best choose at this moment Practical you can do everything you want.
1 fill+key 2 fill out or 4 fill out or even use some bnc for input.
I have made this config to my HP Z800, One extreme 4k for Fill+Key and Duo 2 with 4 FILL out for projectors and play SD PAL without a problem.
