What would you buy today?

Postby silid » 10 Jan 2017, 09:33

Hi all

The wiki has a suitable machine specced for a CasparCG server, but it is a few years old.

I have an idea what I would buy.
What would you buy today?

I'm hoping for a variety of answers based on the posters purpose and budget, or wish list.

Please specify:
System (mainboard or PC model number)
RAM
Drives
OS
GPU
Video Cards
Use Case

Thanks

Can you specify what you want to use your Caspar for, and how many outputs you need? Do you want to use SDI or NDI?

Mine would probably be this:
System: HP Z440
RAM: 16GB
Drives: 3x SSD, one for system, raid 0 for media
OS: Win 7 or Server 2012 (to fit our support infrastructure)
GPU: Quadro M4000
Video Cards: 2x Decklink Duo 2
Use Case: 1x Fill&Key, 6x full screens for broadcast and set.

I'm not trying to solve a particular problem, just trying to get everyone to share ideas. So if you were to replace your own system today, what would you buy and why?

The thing is, to say, what I would buy today, I would ask myself what I need the system for. Does it be able to handle the most demanding jobs with multiple SDI outputs etc. Or does it only need one SDI for simple lower thirds? Do I want to play back (and / or record) huge video clips? Does it need to fit in a plane as cabin baggage? Do I use NDI and therefore don't need slots to fit in Decklinks? etc. Dependant on these, the system wil look completely different.

Perhaps I should rephrase the question.

Have you built a new CasparCG box recently? What was it for and what did you buy?

I'm looking at a graphics system and have purchased a Dell 7910. It allows a decent amount of RAM, a Quadro card and dual Decklink2 Duo cards in a rackmount chassis.

Nice and stable, you can have dual power supplies if it's mission critical too. Highly recommend it if the budget allows.

That looks like a great piece of kit. I was just looking at the HP ML range for dual psu reasons too.

I'm with Silid on that Z440-setup. However, I would trade the Quadro for a GTX1070, but that shouldn't matter to much.

Is that a cost saving measure, or how does performance compare?

cost is lower and performance is better.

the comparison lies in reliability: if the quadro is 99.99% reliable then the gtx is like 99.98% reliable.

high reliability could be important for uses in 24/7 playout but you're not likely to run into problems with a gtx card when you're doing a live production of between one or two hours.

this reliability is required for doing things like cad models or simulations where one false bit can ruin hours of computing. in a broadcast scenario you might have a single bad frame in the entire broadcast, it doesn't matter too much.

but Jesper, how have you found the stability of the drivers to be? I would assume this might be a more controversial point.
