[Sticky] CasparCG 2.0 - Disk Consumer [Updated 12-02-25]

#1
NOTE: This post has been updated to correspond to the latest revision.

We have finally enabled the Disk Consumer. I thought I'd write a short tutorial to help people get started with the consumer and send us feedback!

Some notes:
  • The disk consumer uses ffmpeg to encode video and ffmpeg users will feel somewhat at home with the commands.

    The encoding will take advantage of multi-core cpus.
To start the disk consumer you need to send the following command:

Code: Select all

ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov
Where the file extension will decide the container format and appropriate codec.

To stop it you simply type:

Code: Select all

REMOVE 1 FILE
The default, and recommended format is H264 which uses the highly optimized libx264 encoder. You can of course also choose what codec to encode to. The disc consumer tries to mimic the commandline arguments used by ffmpeg, see ffmpeg for more options. Some of the available options are:

Code: Select all

-f // container format
-vcodec // vicdeo codec
-pix_fmt // pixel_format
-r // video framerate
-s // size
-b // video bitrate
-acodec // audio codec
-ar // audio samplerate
-ab // audio bitrate
-ac // audio channels

Code: Select all

ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec dnxhd
ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec prores
ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec dvvideo
ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec libx264
For the above formats we have already provided high quality default parameters. Though you can of course also specify other codecs (see the -vcodec option in ffmpeg), and the corresponding options (see ffmpeg documentation):

Code: Select all

ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast -tune fastdecode -crf 5
Try it out and and don't forget to give us feedback!

Thanks

You cannot route a videostream from one channel to another. However, what I think you want is multiple consumers outputting the same channel.

Code: Select all

<channel>
<consumers>
    <screen/>
    <decklink>
         <device>3</device>
    </decklink>
</consumers>
</channel>

I still don't understand what you want to do. If you have multiple consumers on the same channel that is the same thing as splitting the video-stream, it will output the same thing on all consumers.

I understand, it's not quite what you want, but try the latest build http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9572945/CasparC ... ta%204.zip

Play on 2 channels, and then in the console write "CHANNEL_GRID", and you will get up a window displaying all channels in a grid,

I am trying to render a flash-template to a file (with alpha) I tried different codecs (according to FFMPEG doc). Until now there was always a dissorted picture (see other post) and I did not found a codec that preserves alpha information...

On the DeckLink everything looks and works as expected. So I think I don't send nonsense to CasparCG...

Here comes the log:

Hm, it's probably a problem with DVCPRO and HD resolution.

DVCPRO is a really annoying format for SD, and it's even worse for HD. I would strongly suggest you use any of the other codecs such as H264, DNXHD, PRORES, QTANIM etc...

Anyways, try on of the other codecs just to verify that it is indeed a problem with HD DVCPRO.

I tried H264, DNXHD and PRORES with the same result. Just used DVCPRO for generation of the Log...

Strange, haven't encountered that problem before. What are you trying to play the output files with? Could you provide a sample DNXHD output file. Also please try with another video-mode e.g. PAL or 720p5000.

I realized, that I had not installed QuickTime. Now it looks ok and DNXHD and PRORES works well (also in HD). The QTANIM codec does not work, do I need QuickTime Pro for it to work? There is still no alpha information, the codecs run in 422. Is there a OPTION to set for alpha?

Thank you for your help and have a happy, blessed and successfull 2012!!!

Re: [Sticky] CasparCG 2.0 - Disk Consumer - A quick introduc

I would suggest you use VLC or CasparCG to look at the output files.

ffmpeg doesn't support alpha in many codecs, as far as I know qtanim and huffyuv have alpha support. To encode with qtanim you need to use the string "qtrle" as codec.

Ok, it seems to be a problem. The audio doesn't disappear "after a while", it's that not all the buffered audio is written to the file before "closing" it. To get around the problem just record more than you need, that way the audio will only be missing in the "over recorded" part. I will take a closer look when I have time.

Try with a RAW audio codec, e.g: -acodec pcm_s16le

I'm playing around with the Disc Consumer and I'm wondering if there has been some changes to it. I tried Robert's line from the first post with -PRESET ULTRAFAST -TUNE FASTDECODE but I get invalid option (and CPU usage up to 100% on i7). What am I missing?

As stated in the wiki:
For DNxHD, ProRes, DV and H.264 codecs we have already provided high quality default parameters, so to get the optimized settings for H.264 your command would only have to be:

Code: Select all

ADD 1 FILE myfile.mov -vcodec libx264
