Playout Xpress - A simple playlist based client

Postby jondezwaan » 09 Feb 2016, 17:49

Hi everyone,

I've been developing a small client for CasparCG, mainly for a fast and easy playlist-based playout.

Image

It's available for download for both Windows and Apple OSX platforms.

Download links: Windows | Apple OSX

New in v1.4

  • Trim your files in the rundown with the new clip inspector.
  • Drag and drop to place files or reorder the rundown
  • General improvements in performance.
  • Some visual enhancements to improve usability and appearance
Bugfixes
  • Fixed a bug in which a file wouldn't load when using the 'Load on select' function.
  • Minor bugfixes

Thanks and cheers,

Jon
[edit: changed download links to new version (V1.4)]

Could you make it possible to turn off automatic progression?

If so then that looks ideal for our VT playout machine :)

@julusian It'll be available in the upcoming version.

I'm also working on transitions:

@TheYouth You mean like running multiple instances of Playout Xpress? Haven't tested it yet, but in the new version you're able to change the channel and layer number:

Update - Playout Xpress 1.1

Image
Image

  • Added preferences panel, to change the channel and layer number, Set the video mode for the channel, and change the default duration of images.
  • Added a 'seek' function. When clicking on the progress bar, Playout Xpress/CasparCG will go to the point clicked.
  • Added 'Single Play' function, to turn off automatic rundown progression.

Known issues: Similar filenames after each other causing trouble in terms of skipping files in the rundown.

Channels was the thing what I needed ;-)
Great software! Thanks!

Could you please add a column in the playlist where the channel number is displayed?

This is really a great start to an application. If you could set a mark in and a duration then it could be fantastic!

Thanks guys!

Will add your requests to my to-do list.

Currently testing running multiple instances of the upcoming client, works fine, but you have to define a OSC port in the config.

And for those of you who can't test the current build of the client; here's a short demo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtolHCJurUE

Wow,

This is a great looking client so far!

I am running on a Mac, but I don't get any time code readout, nor do I get any level indication on the meters.

Is this a current limitation on the Mac, or is something wrong with my configuration?

An easy key layer function would be really a nice ad-on for some applications.

Really really great effort so far!

>>>>UPDATE<<<<

For some reason, I am getting th etimecode readout now, though all of the clips start with a 9 in the hours position.
The Audio Meters also seem to work as well.

Perhaps the numerous restarts I did, working on the new Front End issue fixed this.

The progress indicator is acting a bit wacky though... bounces horizontally across the whole window.

Still, all-in-all a wonderful effort!

Thanks guys.

I'm currently rewriting a large part of the code for better OSC data handling, so forgive the long silence.

The current client is totally relying on OSC information for checking if it should send a loadbg command and can't always handle that large amount of data. So in the upcoming version, the client itself calculates the remaining time, but with OSC timings interval correction. However, I need to rethink the audiometers part and for the time being I'll be skipping those in the upcoming client.

@red455 In the current build you can't, because it receives OSC data from all channels(not a feature, it's a bug, I know), in the upcoming client you can.
@KAHeintzelman I'm aware of the wacky progressbar, should be fixed in the upcoming update.

I have tested your client, it is really a good job. Is it develop with Live Code ?
When do you think it will be possible to test the client with transition ? I'm looking after a solution for playing still images with In and Out transition.

Alright, I've compiled the latest build for Windows, just for testing.

Keep in mind that it's not intended for professional use, I will not take any responsibility.

I appreciate it if those who download it, give some feedback or make a bugreport of it in this topic, in order to improve this client.

Please take note of the following issues/bugs:
- Audio meters broke down, using them can cause the rundown to mess up.
- Double filenames after each other in the rundown will cause skipping the first one.
- Changing video mode during playout can cause trouble in timings. Better to restart the client after changing it.
- When not using local thumbnails, preview thumbnail will not always decode.

Changelog thus far:
- Play colorbars
- Transitions in rundown
- Added features to the preferences.
- New library view.
- Moved timer from OSC to client calculation, with OSC interval corrections.

So there you have it, if you're still eager to give it a go:

Update to version 1.2 (stable).

Most of the features of the previous post are still there, but had to get rid of the OSC readings for now, it caused a memory leak which would eventually lead to an app crash when running Playout Xpress for a relatively long time. The client now gets its timings correction with the "INFO" command, which sends every 5 seconds (default, change when needed in the preference panel) the correct framenumber . Downside of this, is the loss of audio readings.

Good Job. Thanks for your time. About the Library do you think it possible to simplefy? I mean to organize files in subfolder and navigate easyly ? Because actually all video files are shown in the same time. (In the basci CCG client too).

Nice job !
It would be a great feature to have a "cue" button. I mean that it would show the first frame of the sequence, and then continue when you press play :-)

Thanks for your feedback guys. I'm sorry for the lack of updates recently. I've been working on some other projects lately.

I really appreciate your comments and will continue development soon.

@fredericbrandt There's a basic cue function already available in the preference panel, just check 'load on select'. But I will look into a more specific cue/'mark in' function into near future.

Thanks

Hey Jon,

I've noticed that the "load from select" feature does not work properly or I may be attempting to use it incorrectly. It would be extremely nice to have that cue in/out feature. Can you assist with how to load from select in terms of cueing individual files at specific starts in the rundown? Not just one file, but multiple. Would also be huge if you could provide source code as well - unsure if you'd want to make it open source, but I would love to do some tweaking myself if you cannot find time to continue the project currently. Love what you've done!

Thanks a bunch,

Coley

Hello Jon,

Verry nice client.
I'd like to skip trough the rundown using the up/down keys, now this brings up the preferences panel.

This is awesome! Great work.

We have tested this in our environment, we were wondering if it would be possible to add static images?

Another feature that we would love would be the ability to put a countdown clock as an overlay.

Would this be possible?

Love this program! It's exactly what we were looking for. I would love to see the ability to save settings, specifically output resolution and frame rate, so I don't have to set it each time i open the program. It would also be nice to be able to select multiple files from the library at once by shift-clicking, for example to build a slideshow from hundreds of stills in a matter of seconds.

Wonderful program great contribution as open source, I am using playout xpress since more then 2 weeks and observed that some more useful options can help a lot as in my opinion if possible.

* Clip pause at end of last frame function.
* Next Clip park option.
* rundown export option.
* Clip preview option.
